Spanning less than 800 square kilometers, this densely populated island country is rich in culture, beauty and entertainment. Located just off the southernmost tip of Malaysia, with a large international airport, Singapore is a major aviation-hub for the Asia-Pacific region. This means that it is an extremely popular layover destination for long distance flights through the region. So whether you’ve come to Singapore to experience its stunning island network, admire its mesmerising infrastructure or just looking for something to keep you entertained during a long airport layover; this little island packs in something for everyone.

All Day In The Airport?

Singapore Airport (aka. Changi Airport) has been rated “World’s Best Airport” by Skytrax over a dozen times and is well deserving of the title. With over 50 individual attractions spread throughout four terminals and the famous Jewel Building, this airport has everything to do and see that you could imagine. From climbing walls, mazes and playgrounds to interactive gardens, lounges and water features; this airport is a tourist attraction in itself. You could easily spend an entire day, keeping entertained by exploring the airports interior. Below I have listed a few of my most recommended activities and sights, but there are plenty more to choose from.

What to do in Singapore Airport

If you want to explore all the options, look at the ‘Attractions’ list on the Changi Airport Website or follow the link.

In the ‘Jewel’:

  1. The Waterfall – Shiseido Forest Valley and Rain Vortex (FREE to enter and enjoy)

The world’s tallest indoor waterfall, cascading down 7 storeys in the heart of the Jewel complex. Immerse yourself amongst the sounds and smells of the canopy as you step into a garden wonderland with dozens of walkways and seating to move at your own pace as you gaze upon this towering water feature, flowing from a vortex hole in the ceiling. You can also view this feature from the basement levels behind glass for a closer feel to the mesmerising waterfall.

  1. Canopy Park and other paid attractions

If you are looking to stay within the airport bounds (for connecting flight convenience or visa reasons), there are plenty of interactive activities and zones at an additional small fee. The Canopy Park includes attractions such as the Discovery Slides, Foggy Bowls, Petal Garden and Topiary Walk that allow a fully immersive art and sculpture experience at approximately $8 SGD per adult (other price categories available). And if immersive art still doesn’t quite entertain you enough, there is also a hedge maze ($14 SGD), Mirror maze ($19 SGD) and 25 metre high Walking Net ($19 SGD) to take your experience to the next level. Costs of these additional paid attractions also include a Canopy Park ticket in their prices.

Terminal 1:

  1. Cactus garden

Escape to the rooftop to a 24 hour bar surrounded by over 100 species of cacti for a surreal and unique garden setting. Bask in the sun or drink under the stars, this stunning union of nature and entertainment will guarantee an interesting topic of conversation and perhaps you’ll even learn something new about these tenacious prickly plants.

Terminal 2:

  1. Sunflower Garden

A golden rooftop garden that will put a smile on your face. A stunning nursery of sunflowers to embrace and capture a photo with. Open 24 hours, every day, you can enjoy these radiant flowers while soaking in the natural sun’s rays, or venture to the roof at night to experience the magical scene under special, gentle lighting.

Terminal 3:

  1. Butterfly Garden

Embrace the beauty of the Butterfly. Delicate and agile, these quick little insects are often difficult to encounter up close in the wild. However, as the world’s first butterfly enclosure within an airport, you can step into a room filled with these flying beauties at any time and watch them sit peacefully upon the greenery or eat some of the sweet fresh fruit laid out for them. A perfect opportunity to get up close to these cute and curious creatures, but try not to touch them or disturb their flight. If you’re interested in learning more about the various species, nutrition, breeding and life-cycle of the butterflies, you will find plenty of information boards within the enclosure. There is also a glass wall on the front of the cocoon chamber, so that you can witness the cycle of the butterfly at all stages of its transition to the winged beauty that we adore.

  1. Climbing Gym

Ready to take your visit to a whole new level? The team at ‘The Rock School’ have opened an indoor climbing wall on the 3rd basement level of Terminal 3. For an additional fee, you can expel some energy and get in a fun workout on the wall. Using their auto belay ropes technology, it’s easier than ever to come in, clip in and climb up the wall for some exciting indoor entertainment.

Terminal 4:

  1. Chandelier

This 16 metre, vertical, play structure provides fun for all ages! Take to the skies as you climb through this exciting, floor to ceiling, net chandelier. Open 24 hours and located right in the middle of the departure hall in Terminal 4, this playground could not be more convenient.

Just a quick train away:

Would you rather get out and about? Singapore’s extensive railway system makes exploring the country fast, easy and affordable. If you only have one day to explore but would like to get out of the airport and see as much as you can, there are a few unique sights that are a must see on a one day itinerary. No need to hire a car or bother with taxis to gain a good taste of this beautiful and clean country in less than 24 hours. Below are a few of my favorites that we were able to experience with just a few hours to spare.

  1. Gardens by the Bay

Easily one of the most iconic attractions in Singapore, Gardens by the Bay simply can’t be missed on your itinerary. A marvelous combination of urban art meets natural flora, this stunning garden will allow you to experience nature in both an exhilarating and educational manner.

With FREE admission to more than 10 unique themed gardens and attractions, featuring thousands of plant species, it will be hard to pick your favourite spot. From greenery, to wetlands, to the spectacular Supertree grove, you will fill your camera roll with hundreds of beautiful flowers, colours, and lights. Most of the free attractions are open from 5am to 2am, so no matter the time of day or night, you will be able to experience the gardens either with the natural sunlight or under spectacular lighting and colour displays.

For an additional fee, you can also take to the skies and experience Singapore from a higher perspective from one of the Skyway observatory platforms or gaze upon rare and wonderful flora displays in the temperature-controlled conservatory domes.

So whether you just enjoy a casual walk through the gardens or would like to learn more about exotic plant species, Gardens by the Bay will leave you satisfied and amazed. For more information about this beautiful area or to book some of the spectacular paid experiences, visit the Gardens by the Bay Website or follow this link; Gardens by the Bay

  1. Merlion Park

The Merlion is the official mascot of Singapore. It is a mythical creature that resembles the head of a lion on the body of a fish. With rich historical significance, an 8 metre tall merlion statue and water feature can be found overlooking Marina Bay in Merlion Park. Approximately a 20 minute walk from Gardens by the Bay, enjoy a casual stroll through the streets of Singapore to come and marvel at this iconic symbol. The Park also features a few smaller Merlion statues, wishing wells and lovely eateries to explore.

  1. Public Art Installation Trail

Singapore is known for its impressive architecture and incredible ability to merge art and nature to create a beautiful undertone within a bustling cityscape. As you walk through the streets you are likely to find many outdoor art installations of every size, colour, and medium. With many of the works created by local artists, they portray an intriguing aspect of Singapore’s heritage. The installations are scattered throughout the country, however, there is one particular street in the business district that has a much denser collection of works. The walkways of De Souza Street and Raffles Place, surrounding Singapore’s Prestigious Art Gallery, exhibits 8 individual large scale sculptures as well as many more within a few minutes walk. Some of the more iconic sculptures in this area are ‘Momentum’ by David Gerstein, ‘Singapore Soul’ by Jaume Plensa, ‘All the Essentially Essential’, and ‘Mirror Balls’ across the river.

Have a little more time?

24 hours is not really enough time to experience everything that an entire country has to offer, but it is understandable that not everyone has the funds or the time to extensively explore an area, particularly if you are just passing through with a long layover or a tight budget. Above are some of my favorite sights and activities that I managed to fit into just one 20 hour layover that I had in 2022, but this was not my only trip to Singapore!

If you have a little extra time or would rather spend the full day doing one main activity rather than exploring around, Singapore has plenty of other amazing attractions to enjoy. For example;

  1. Santosa Island – a great place for a swim, boardwalk and gondola ride
  2. Universal studios – discover the magic and exhilarating roller coasters
  3. Singapore Zoo – 100s of incredible animals to embrace
  4. Nature Parks and Botanic Gardens – Awe at Singapore’s natural greenery
  5. Museums and War Memorial – Learn about Singapore’s rich heritage

All of these and so much more! Let me know if you’d like me to provide more information about what there is to do and see in Singapore, so that you are ready for your next holiday!
